Laser Structuring in Medical Device Technology

Custom-Made Surfaces

The basic principle of laser structuring is the ablation of material through short high-energy laser pulses. This exact process control allows creating of microstructures smaller than 15 microns and the ablation of entire surface layers. In this way, polymer layers can be ablated during catheter production, and entire surfaces can be custom-made - featuring structures in the micron range in order to ioptimize the biological interaction of implants. Filigree tools for plastic micro components like die casting molds with very fine channels can be created by lasers.

Easy opening for packaging like calibrating of pouch edges have been realized with mechanical methods up to now, they require quite high initial powers and create uncontrolled rip contours. Easy Opening, the selective weakening of packaging foils with the laser, is the new sophisticated method. Laser technology benefits from the different optical properties of the individual film layers: the mechanically supporting layers are selectively weakened without affecting the functionality of other layers (light and vapor tightness).
