Laser Fine Cutting

Cutting Widths Below 20 µm

Systems for laser fine cutting process stents with tube diameters of less than 200 microns with cut widths smaller than 20 microns. The laser does not damage the opposite tube wall and allows radial and non-radial cuts, opening of finest tubes as well as cutting of hollow needle points.

The minimal heat affected zone provides for a gentle treatment of temperature-sensitive material, e.g. the frequently used Nitinol. Nearly all cutting geometries are feasible – including cutting edges with variable cutting angles. The high quality of the cutting edges – with almost no burrs, edge hardening and tapering – reduces the need for post-processing enormously. The big benefits of laser fine cutting are high speed and high productivity compared to competing mechanical or chemical processes or even eroding.

Foils commonly used in the medical device industry made of polymethylmethacrylate, polypropylene or colored polycarbonate can be cut and perforated with high speed and high accuracy by CO2 lasers equipped with fast scanner heads.
