Compared to common separating methods, such as flame cutting or cutting with hot knife, laser technology offers benefits when it comes to flexibility and quality. In general CO2 lasers with galvo scanner heads are used for fine cutting of PMMA, PET and many other plastics providing for highest flexibility, precision and speed. Due to the special laser micro melt the separated edge surface looks very clean and is of high quality as there are no micro cracks. Other than cutting with the hot knife, the laser wont get blunt thus guaranteeing a constant cut quality.
Particularly environmental and cost aspects benefit from separating composite material with the laser. Water jet cutting is commonly used for separating but causes considerably efforts for ecological recycling the cutting water charged with abrasive particles. In addition, there a re maintenance and repair costs due to wear. With this application, cutting with the q-switched disc laser is three times more cost-effective.

A typical example for laser cutting of sprues is separating PMMA windows for mobile phones.
